Andrew and I were both keen to get down to the Hawkesbury round of the bream comp as I had fished here a few times for bream before. Andrew fished here once before, we had both caught fish here, and there for we were Breaming with confidence.
Well so we thought! Our eagerness had us on the water by 5:40am and it was cold brrrr really cold. 6am arrived and we were off it was the first bream comp where we new where we were going and what we would do, well sort of.
We hit the leases around all the moorings directly opposite Brooklyn and it was a good hour of flogging the water before my choice of chubby found its first victim. A small but feisty bream pulled from under a lease, you beauty I got one.
We stayed around the leases for another hour with only 1 fish so far. Andrew finally talks me into flicking a few around the moored boats as he was getting worried he might put a stray cast into a lease.
About the fifth cast I made was a shocker. I wound it hastily in, a bit dirty with myself, next thing the rod was bent over I couldn’t believe it. After a quick fight I brought a nice plate size flathead along side. I was really shocked and a bit disappointed that it wasn’t a silver and bronze bruizer.
Andrew finally came into some luck with a pesky Tailor of about 170mm hitting a Lucky Craft diver I gave him to try. He just looked at me and said “hey, it’s a start”. Along the same row of boats I managed another small bream to the same chubby as earlier. I decided I would stick with it for the rest of the morning.
We didn’t boat another fish that whole day and the story seemed to be the same for most of the other boats. Things were looking good for me and my 2 smallish bream. I started to think I maybe in with a chance here. That was of course we came across Rod, Elise and Grant. They had found a great spot and caught many fish. Rod was all smiles as he told us of his new spot and we were sworn to secrecy. We left the water and waited for all boats to return.

Rod Hardiman with a couple nice Bream
Rod and Elise motored in right on the time limit and there were many shouts and laughing from the shore line that they were to late but there was no way we were taking this one away from Rod. There was even suggestion that this round was just a practice round because the fishing was so slow. But not for Rod and Elise, well done guys congratulations.
Well so much for that confidence. Come on Andrew we’ll have to try harder next time!
